Harlem Reacts to ‘Harlem Shake’ Meme
No surprise here. Several Harlem residents are less than thrilled with the viral “Harlem Shake” videos, wherein groups of people in crazy costumes thrash around to a song by Brooklyn producer Baauer. Filmmaker Chris McGuire recorded residents’ alternately confused and insulted reactions to the videos. “That’s not the Harlem Shake at all. That’s humping,” said one man. “It’s an absolute mockery of what it was because there’s actually a sense of rhythm that goes along with it,” said a woman. The original Harlem Shake was a dance that began in Harlem in 1981 and was derived from an Ethiopian dance, the “Eskista.”
In other words, it’d probably be best to save oneself from embarrassment and not participate in the new trend.
